"We started exactly at noon from Idaho Springs Estimated was that we would climb 5 hours, considering we carried
our gear and wind was heavy and against us. Echo lake and crossing at halfway was reached at 2hours 10min. We would
take other road (to Evergreen) from here down so we filled drinking bottles, had some snack, left excess gear here
and continued at 2hours 30min. Road was closed from Echo lake up, which was really nice: no more cars or exhaust
gas. We met about 10 descending bikers as we climbed but no-one passed us. We were the last ones this day to attempt
to summit. Above treeline wind got very heavy at times. On some descending sections it was necessary to kick downhill
to advance!
Some mountain goats got photographed. Otherwise mountain was quite empty. Temperatures were just above freezing
which is good luck at this time of the year. Road was dry all the way. Grades climbing Mt. Evans are relatively
easy, average about 5% which is much less than most Alpine roads in Europe.
On summit lake there was some ice. Had I had Kickspark with me I would have 'opened' the season and reported that
to Finland immediately. Ice season opening is always a bit of a contest.
Jaani got some stomach trouble, which could be to blame high altitude. Peak is well over 4000m or 14000feet. I
reached top parking lot at 4hours 50min and decided to skip walk to mountain top since weather wasn't exactly comfortable.
There are many peaks above Mt. Evans but not that many roads.
After just 1.5 miles descending I met Jaani, who had climbed up at little slower pace. He decided to turn back
now as it was soon getting dark.
Down to Echo lake, get bikes loaded, and over squaw pass towards Denver. Descent is absolutely great. Grade is
shallow enough to allow two hours of coasting. Too bad it got dark at 6.30 and we only had one led-headlight".
